Summer Beach Outfits
Ready for some fun in the sun?
It’s time to start planning your summer beach wardrobe. Whether you are going on a beach vacation, beach date, or just spending a lazy by the water, I’ve put together a long list of cute and stylish outfits that will cover any beach-based occasion.
Beach outfits that are a little dressy are great for dates at the beach or beach events like a concert. Casual beach outfits are for those days when you want to go to the beach but not get into the water but you’re admiring it from afar. Then there are those beach outfits that are made up of a cute summer bikini and maybe a cover-up.
So let’s get going and learn how to put together a cute and stylish beach outfit, then you can see my examples for inspiration!
3 Steps to Putting Together a Cute Beach Outfit
When it comes to cute beach outfits, the options are endless so start by narrowing your choices down to the occasion. What you wear to the beach with your friends on the weekend will be entirely different from what you wear to the beach for a business event. Appropriate attire will not only help you look stylish, but it’s also respectful to the person putting on the event.
After identifying the occasion, it’s time to decide what style you’re going for. Do you want to look classically chic, boho, young, sexy? What do you want your beach outfit to say about you? Because our clothes speak for us before we do, you want to make sure you’re getting the right message across. This is essential even for beach outfits.
The last component in putting together your perfect beach outfit is the actual items themselves and making sure they match the style you’re going for. If you’re going to the beach for a dinner date, you most likely want to look stylish but still keep the beach vibe in your look. For example, in the beach outfit below I paired a printed chiffon maxi dress in blue and white with a pair of blue wedges and a matching handbag. I kept the beachy essence by selecting a thin fabric, a fun print, light colors, and coordinated my accessories to the occasion.
In the 21 beach outfits below I share with you a variety of looks that would work for many occasions. These outfits are not just bikinis or dresses. I wanted to make sure this resource is something you could use when you needed a dressy beach outfit or something to wear strolling the boardwalk.
Use these beach outfit ideas for your inspiration, a jumping off point in putting together your outfit.

21 Cute Beach Outfits for Your Inspiration
#1 Dressy Beach Style
In this outfit, it’s the details that help to make this a bit dressier. The long-sleeve white blouse is lightweight, but it’s the lacy sleeves that make it stand out and up the wow factor. Paired with a colorful tropical-inspired short, matching wedged sandals, and a summer fedora, this outfit is perfect for brunch, shopping, a date, or a concert.
#2 Boho Beach Style
For your time in the sun, nothing beats a bikini. This two piece is classic in its cut but with the added stitching and embroidered floral pattern; it swings to the boho style. Add a flowery, and flowy beach cover up (or caftan), and a wide-brimmed hat and you’re set for a day at the beach.
#3 Cute Beach Style
This outfit can go from breakfast to a bike ride to the beach, all in the same day. I’ve paired a colorful bikini with a scalloped tank, white linen shorts, and colorful beaded sandals. The hat is a must to protect your hair and face from the sun, and the bracelets add a bit more color for fun.
#4 Cute Summer Bikini
For a day spent in the sand, this tie-dye inspired bikini with denim shorts is the perfect combo. Add in matching bracelets and a sun hat, and you’re ready for the sunshine.
#5 Mismatched Bikini
I love to mix it up with beachwear, and this is the perfect example. The frilly style of the top is completely different from the traditional material and cut oof the bottoms. You can mix solid colors, like I do here, or have one piece be print and one solid. You can even mix prints if they are done right!
#6 Fun with Print
This outfit is the perfect example of mixing prints. The two distinct patterns work so well together because they are in the same color scheme. I’ve even added a third print with the striped shoulder bag!
#7 Pretty Blue Prints
This is a great example of a dressy outfit with a beach vibe, with the vibrant blues reminiscent of the sea and sky. I’ve paired a blue print dress, with blue wedge sandals, a fedora, and a lightweight denim jacket. Perfect for a date, brunch, dinner, or business event.
#8 Perfect Summer Bikini
Everyone has their idea of the perfect summer bikini, and this one is mine. I like that the top is a bit different, while the bottoms are classic. It’s comfortable, wears well in the water, and looks good under a cover up!
#9 Printed Maxi Dress
Maxi dresses are the perfect beach outfit. They can be dressed up with heels or used as a beach cover up. I love this Donna Morgan dress, it’s got a beachy vibe but is classic in style with accordion pleating and the stark white top. Think about trying an ikat print, floral, tie-dye or stripe!
#10 Cali Girl Style
Paddleboarding and hanging at a SoCal beach require appropriate attire, namely a bikini, short shorts and tank. I’m wearing a black print bikini with acrylic detailing on the straps, brightly colored shorts and, of course, a California Love tank (from Billabong).
#11 Maxi Swim Cover Up
While this is a full-length cover up, the see-through lacy material keeps you cool. I’m wearing it with the same black-and-white print bikini from #10. A note of caution: this type of material will not provide protection from the sun, so keep lathering on that sunscreen.
#12 Wear a Tankini Instead
Not everyone loves or is suited to wear a bikini. If you are in that camp or just want a change of pace, try a tankini. Tankinis are two-piece bathing suits, with a tank-inspired top and a pair of bottoms (which can be a bikini, boy shorts, or even a swim skirt).
#13 Have Fun with Words and/or Crochet
Want to stand out a bit from the crowd? Don a tank or tee with a saying (people love to try and read them). Pair it with some crocheted shorts, a lightweight cropped jacket, and sandals, and you can head to the farmer’s market, shopping the promenade, or a picnic at the beach.
#14 One-of-a-Kind Romper
Rompers have been all the rage the last few years, and they are easy to wear, especially over a bathing suit. This unique romper is crocheted and not something you see every day. Try one with a unique cutout or back, made with a fun material or paired with a colorful belt.
#15 Go Classic with Stripes
Reminiscent of the Breton sailors of old, this blue-and-white striped tee is a classic. While I’ve paired with some fancier white crocheted shorts, you can just as easily mix it with denim or linen shorts in any number of colors. (Red, green, yellow…)
#16 Bright Periwinkle Pants
I love colored denim, and this periwinkle blue is perfect for the beach. Paired with a simple skinny-strap top and sandals, it’s perfect for a beach date, shopping, or brunch.
#17 Layer When Necessary
I often find that I need a beach outfit that can transform from colder to warmer weather. I achieve a balance by layering up. I’m wearing a bathing suit under a white, belted maxi dress, topped by a cropped denim jacket.
#18 Add Bright Neon
Neon is a fun and stylish addition to beach outfits. While not everyone can wear it, you should rock it if you can. I love this perforated razorback tank paired with colorful shorts, and the requisite beachside flip-flops.
#19 Fun Workout Clothes
Heading to muscle beach? Jogging along the shore? Taking a coast side bike ride? Don some fun and colorful workout clothes. The colorful leggings, sports bra, and tank make me instantly happy when I put them on. It’s amazing what some color can do for your mood!
#20 Light Denim on Denim
Summertime is perfect for white jeans, and here I have paired them with a light-wash denim jacket, colorful tee, and some fun animal print flats. This is a good choice for a slightly chillier day or when the wind comes up and is appropriate for all casual occasions.
#21 Add Pops of Color
The beach is the perfect venue for colorful clothing. You don’t have to wear color head to toe, though. Think about adding pops here and there, like the fuchsia stitching on the white cover up and the orange sandals. You could also try a brightly colored tote, hat, or jewelry.
