The Perfect Spring Jacket – A Silk Bomber
The Spring’s IT Jacket – The Bomber
The Spring jacket that has everyone in a shopping frenzy is the bomber, more precisely: a silk bomber. This aviation staple made a hit on the runway and is now making it to stores everywhere. Yours truly is loving this army inspired trend.
The bomber jacket, aka the flight jacket, was created for pilots during World War I to keep them warm. But it wasn’t until Tom Cruise sported this stylish gear in the movie Top Gun that this jacket really went mainstream. Iteration after iteration have entered the market. Now fast forward 30 or so plus years from it’s Hollywood debut we have today’s silk bomber. Not only available in the run of the mill green but in bright hues, florals, animal print and in geometric patterns in a variety of colors.
The utilitarian purpose of the bomber jacket has evolved into a pretty spring jacket and is one of my staples this season. The light shape makes it the perfect companion for flirty shorts or distressed white jeans. Its fullness makes it ideal for balancing out form fitting bottoms.
There are a variety of colors, prints and patterns available this spring, so you don’t have to stick with solids. From florals bright poppy florals or black and white geometric prints you can find the perfect one that fits your personal style. Of course, if you plan to wear your bomber a lot this spring it’s probably best that you go with a neutral solid, like I have.
How to Wear a Bomber Jacket
Pair your silk bomber with your favorite skinny jeans, snug shorts or form fitting bermudas. You want to stay away from full skirts or pants since the bomber jacket is already a statement piece. Remember: proportion is key. Loose top means a tighter piece on the bottom.
I wore this gorgeous navy bomber with printed shorts and white ribbed tank with matching blue flats. I like to clasp the last button on the jacket and have it fit snug around my waist for a shapely fit, you can see how it looks in the last two photos.
How do you feel about this lovely spring take on the bomber?
PS: The lovely bomber jacket I’m wearing in this outfit is from Michael Stars.
