A Winter Wardrobe Essential – A Gentleman’s Hat
The women I’ve talked to don’t wear a gentleman’s hat because they’re not sure what to look for when buying one and they’re unsure how to style the piece into their personal style.
In this post, I will teach you what to look for when buying your own Gentleman’s Hat and provide advice on how to fit the hat into your winter outfits using the clothes you already have in your closet.
Hats are new additions to my looks. It was difficult for me to incorporate a Gentleman’s Hat in the beginning because of the variety and the immediate attention a hat brings to a look, which can either be good or bad. But today, I know that hats are eye catching accessories that are largely overlooked. A designer bag or vintage jewelry can convey how you feel but a menswear hat is an accessory that immediately demands attention. If you feel hats are reserved for the select few who can pull them off, think again. You can and do have enough cachet to pull off this hat trick.
How to Wear a Gentleman’s Hat
There are a variety of hats designed for men that now are adopted by women; the fedora, trilby, panama and the outback just to name a few. The one I’m wearing in this outfit is a wool outback hat. It has an embellishment of a brown belt along the side for an added touch of attitude.
I must admit this is by far one of the easiest hats to wear because of its laid back appeal. If you want to venture into the hat world with baby steps than I would suggest something like the one I’m wearing. Look for an outback hat in gray, brown, dark brown and even camel but I would advise staying away from black unless you want to look like a desperado.
Because of the causal essence of the hat I went with a very casual outfit. A flat pair of ankle boots, loose dress, boyfriend cardigan and plaid scarf. All in the same color family and the same style.
The overall look you’re going for and your personality determines the hat that is right for you. For example, the fedora carries with it the essence of mystery and menace, due to its common association with gangsters and detectives. If you want to have an air of mystery or pay homage to the great Frank Sinatra then tip your hat and own a fedora.
The trilby is often associated with musicians and this style of hat has been made popular more recently by the one and only Justin Timberlake. It can be both very casual or high style, a la Victoria Beckham, depending on what you wear with it. You can wear a trilby hat with a classic trench, high heeled booties and structured handbag to dress it up or denim jeans, t-shirt and black leather jacket just make sure the hat color goes with the overall outfit.
Every woman needs a hat to call her own a hat she feels comfortable in. But no matter how you choose your outfit the one thing you can’t forget when wearing your gentleman’s hat is your confidence.
I would love to know how you feel about this attention grabbing accessory! Let me know in the comments!
Stay Stylish,
