How to Make Something that Wouldn’t Work, Work

The first thing that came to mind when I started to write this post was a bit inappropriate: “slutty to sexy” – but once the look was put together it was more about changing a look from provocative/revealing to confident and elegant. You may ask, why? Well, let me explain. I consider myself a modest girl. As you can see from my looks – I lean towards the classic-conservative side of the fashion spectrum. I like to mesh trendy items with classic pieces, like two-tone denim cut-offs with a lace top and khaki blazer or a trendy take on a peplum dress.

This outfit began with a form hugging white tube dress, yes, this is the provocative part. The challenge before me was to taking this dress from “provocative to elegant” and turn this dress, which I would never wear, into something I would feel more comfortable in. I added a boyfriend tee to tone the look down a bit but it still needed more. I then added a black blazer and a pair of wedges and voilà, elegant.

I am forced to concede there is still some sexiness in this aesthetic. Yet I feel I am more confident in this look after adding the additional pieces. This doesn’t mean that you always have to cover up a short form hugging dress, it might work for you and it also depends on the occasion. For example, I might wear this white dress over a bathing suit with sandals and a large sunhat.

How do you make pieces you normally wouldn’t wear work for you?

Stay Styish,
-V

I love how clean and casual this outfit is! I would never have guessed that it started off as “provocative” haha, although you could totally pull off any outfit and make it look completely classy and elegant 🙂

I tend not to buy things that I would feel awkward wearing all on their own, but I do usually put a pair of the nude spanx under a skirt that’s short so I feel that if a mishap were to occur I would be covered. I do think that it is important to know how to remix your pieces like you did here though. It’s wasted closet space for a dress you’d only wear one way, and only once in a while.

When I wear something that’s too short I usually wear a pair of nike compression shorts, I think they are so comfortable. I always try to remix things and wear them again and again. I’m happy you liked the look.

It is most important that you feel good in whatever you wear. At your age and with your fantastic figure, a bodycon dress or a very short skirt wouldn’t be an issue, however if you don’t feel confident, then it will show.
You did a great job in turning your outfit into a very stylish look. Love it and you look fabulous as always!

Thank you so much Annette. I do try things that are out of my comfort zone at times. Check out my next outfit post, it’s a little different from what I normally wear.

When I first saw this look I didn’t even realize you has a bodycon dress under, well done. I will try that.

Thank you Rachelle. Yes it’s an unexpected way to pull of a bodycon dress.

I think you could totally wear this to work, except maybe the shoes depending on how conservative your office is. But you would still look hot!
