You may not know about this up-and-coming designer, the lovely Joanne Hong who I met at February’s Magic Tradeshow in Las Vegas. But it’s obvious you soon will. She was selected as an up-and-coming designer which allowed her to show her collection at the Magic Emerging Designer Showcase.
Please enjoy my interview with Joanne and let me know what you think of her designs.
What inspired you to pursue fashion?
I didn’t always know that I wanted to be in fashion. When I first started college, I thought it would be fun to be a buyer because I loved shopping. But when I would shop, there would always be something missing or a detail that I wanted to change on the garment. I soon decided that it would be more interested to actually design and create the clothes. When I took my first sewing class, everything clicked and fell into place.
Did you have any early influences that sparked your interest in clothes?
My mom was always fashionable when I was growing up but I never had any interest in clothes until I got to college.
What do you consider your ideal environment to work and create?
I love sketching outside on my rooftop or in a park where I have the city energy around me. I ideally like working in environment with lots of space where I can spread out, but most of the time I just need music and I can easily get in the zone and work for hours.
Where do you seek visual inspiration?
I seek visual inspiration everywhere. From the fashion I see walking around the streets to the fabrics and textures I see in the fabric stores.
What influenced your current, Fall 2012, collection?
My fall collection was influenced by the concept of aristocratic chic. I wanted to create a collection that embraced femininity, romance, and elegance. In Jolynn, a woman can go from her office, to events, and to nightlife feeling confident while looking effortlessly chic.
What materials would you like to experiment with for future collections?
For future collections, I would like to experiment more with mixing textured fabrics within my designs as well as using knits.
What is your favorite thing about living in New York?
My favorite thing about living in NYC is the amazing energy the city creates. The energy motivates, inspires, and constantly reminds me of why I decided to move to NYC from Oklahoma. And that is to pursue my dream in fashion.
Guilty pleasure you never feel guilty about?
My guilty pleasure is buying shoes. No outfit is complete without a fabulous pair of shoes.
How would you describe your style?
My style is very girly. I love anything with bows, ruffles, pleats, and lace.
What makes you StylishlyYou?
I feel like what makes me stylish is I can always put an outfit together, regardless of how simple, and put a spin on it making it more feminine and chic.
